Is The ‘Barbie Pasta’ Trend Actually Tasty?
Recently, recipes for “Barbie Pasta” have popped up all across social media, coinciding with the release of the Greta Gerwig blockbuster.
The one core ingredient to every rendition? Beets, whether they be blended into ricotta, feta, or even cream cheese. Their vibrant hue is essential if you want to make a pastel pasta of your own.
One of the more common methods for this dish has been to combine together beets, goat cheese, and another form of dairy (ie. cream cheese or Greek Yogurt) to make the bright pink sauce.
After giving that flavor combination a spin on a recent Foodbeast Kitchen Twitch stream, Foodbeast Chris decided to buck that part of the trend and used a beet-infused bechamel instead to bring a Barbie Lasagna to life.
The pink bechamel was accompanied by a blend of cheeses, ground turkey, and oven-ready lasagna sheets for a simple yet colorful twist to the Barbie Pasta hype.
I was able to get some of the leftovers to try, and as a standard white lasagna goes, it’s pretty tasty. Sadly, you don’t get much flavor of the beet in there, as its primary purpose in this whole recipe is for color.
Considering not everybody loves the earthy flavor of beets, it’s understandable if you want to mask the taste. However, with the right combination of ingredients, like garlic, citrus, and goat cheese, it can make for a pretty scrumptious meal.
So, is “Barbie Pasta” actually tasty? It all comes down to how you transform the beets to your liking. If you pull that off, then you can enjoy the fad both for its visuals and its flavor.
