Contaminated Eggs Recalled From 34 States

You may want to think twice about that seemingly harmless egg salad at the grocery store deli.

Minnesota-based food distribution giant Michael Foods has recalled over a million hard-cooked eggs due to possible listeria contamination. Although Michael Foods does not sell directly to retailers, the cooked and peeled eggs were sold to many distributors, manufacturers, and food service companies, leading to the recall of prepackaged sandwiches and salads, as well as the following brand of eggs: Columbia Valley Farms, GFS, Glenview Farms, Papetti’s, Silverbrook, and Wholesome Farms.

Listeria contamination can lead to listeriosis, an infection that occurs from the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms include gastrointestinal infection, nausea, fever, and diarrhea. Although not debilitating for the healthy adults, listeriosis can be serious for young children, adults over 50, adults with a weakened immune system, and pregnant women.

The 34 states that have been affected by this recall are as follows: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.
